Parents often ask when they should expect to see the first baby tooth or the first permanent tooth. Tooth eruption patterns vary considerably from person to person. However, the first baby teeth usually appears around 6 months of age and it’s usually the two bottom front teeth. Next to follow will be the upper front teeth. The remainder of your baby’s teeth will appear periodically and usually in pairs along the sides of the jaw until the child is about two to three years old. Most children have all twenty baby teeth by the time they turn 3.
Between the ages of six and seven, the first permanent teeth will begin to erupt. Some of the permanent teeth replace baby teeth and some don’t. Don’t worry if some teeth are a few months early or late as all children are different.
Baby teeth are important as they not only hold space for permanent teeth, but we need them for chewing, biting, and speech. We also need healthy teeth to present a healthy smile. Kids with cavities can become self conscious about their appearance or worse yet, have pain if a cavity gets out of control. Keep in mind that while kids lose some of their teeth at 6 years old, they lose others as late as 12-13 years old so keeping them cavity-free is important.
